Chapter Six

Priest felt like a heel. He was standing outside the door of the guest bedroom, taking in deep breaths and then swallowing them down. Running a hand over his face, Priest knew he should be in there helping Randy. He knew this. But when it came time to pay up or shut up, he had fled.

It had taken him the entire night to go over things in his mind. His inner voice had told him that he could do this. That he could handle whatever was going on with Randy. Just do it, his gut had screamed. Randy was a small, scared, hurting man—a guy who couldn’t seem to defend himself against whoever was hurting him even though he was a shifter. That only told Priest that whoever was attacking Randy was more powerful than the small wolf.

That thought alone had driven Priest out of the house and to the hospital.

Maverick had told Priest that Randy was his mate. That fate had said they should spend the rest of their lives together, although Priest thought it went a little deeper than that. But he had given this situation some soul-searching thought. He had flipped the situation over and over in his mind all night long and through the early morning.

He had concluded that Maverick was right. He had come here to start over. Who said Randy wasn’t exactly what he needed? Who said he wouldn’t have a great life with the small man? Just because he had never had a relationship with a guy before didn’t mean it wouldn’t work out for him.

Pulling a steady breath into his lungs, Priest pushed himself away from the wall and opened the door. If he was going to do this then he needed to accept Randy in all his forms, not just—Priest froze midstep and midthought.

When he had left Randy standing in the room, the man had been human. Now…now there was a wolf lying in the bed—albeit a very small wolf, but a wolf nonetheless. Priest was expecting to see this ginormous creature with sharp teeth and a really bad attitude. That had been part of his hesitancy.

Never before having met a wolf shifter, Priest’s imagination conjured up all kinds of large and frightening images.

But as he stared at the bed, he realized that Randy was none of those things. As a matter of fact, Randy just looked like an oversized dog. Approaching the bed, Priest drank in the sight with his eyes. The wolf was grey with an infusion of dark-brown through his fur. His chest was rising and falling at a rapid rate. The guy looked like he was hyperventilating in his sleep. Was that normal? Then again, none of this was anywhere near normal. He
